Who this is for
North Texas homeowners replacing a hail-damaged roof or comparing shingle upgrades.
What Impact-Resistant Shingles Are
Impact-resistant shingles are asphalt shingles built to withstand impact better than a standard shingle — typically through a reinforced backing, a modified asphalt formulation, or both. Their rating comes from UL 2218, a laboratory test in which steel balls of increasing size are dropped onto the shingle from a set height. A shingle that survives the test without cracking at a given ball size earns that class.
Class 4 is the highest rating in that test and represents the largest steel ball. Class 3 sits one step below it. The rating describes performance in a controlled laboratory impact, not a guarantee about any particular storm.
When an Impact-Resistant Upgrade Makes Sense
You're already replacing the roof
The upgrade costs far less as part of a replacement you're doing anyway than as a reason to replace a roof early.
You've been through more than one hail claim
If the property has a history of hail damage, a more impact-resistant shingle is a reasonable response to a repeating pattern.
You plan to stay in the home
The value of a tougher shingle accumulates over years of ownership rather than showing up immediately.
When a standard shingle is the sensible choice
If the roof has years of life left, or the budget is better spent on decking, ventilation or flashing details that are actually failing, we'll tell you that instead.
What it will not do
No shingle is hail-proof. Large or wind-driven hail can damage an impact-resistant roof, and impact rating says nothing about wind performance or installation quality.

Blue Roofing's Experience
Blue Roofing is a family-owned North Texas roofing contractor, in business since 2018, with more than 1,000 projects completed. Hail is the most common reason homeowners here call us, so shingle selection comes up on most replacements we quote.
Blue Roofing is GAF Certified and a Malarkey Emerald Pro Contractor, and both manufacturers offer impact-rated shingle lines. Which specific product suits a given roof depends on the roof, the budget and what the homeowner is trying to accomplish — we'll go through the options rather than default to the most expensive one.

What Homeowners Actually Ask About
- Class 3 versus Class 4
- Both are impact-rated; Class 4 withstands the largest steel ball in the UL 2218 test and Class 3 the next size down. Class 4 is the rating insurers most often ask about.
- Insurance considerations
- Some insurers offer a premium credit for an impact-rated roof and some do not, and the terms vary by carrier and policy. Ask your carrier directly before assuming a discount — we won't promise one on their behalf.
- Cost
- Impact-rated shingles cost more per square than standard architectural shingles. The difference is most defensible when it's folded into a replacement you were already doing.
- Appearance
- Impact-rated lines are made in the same architectural profiles and colour ranges as standard shingles, so the upgrade is generally not visible from the street.
- Repairability after a storm
- An impact-rated roof still needs inspection after significant hail. Damaged shingles are replaced with matching impact-rated product, so keeping a record of what was installed is worth doing.
- It's a system, not one product
- Underlayment, ventilation, flashing, valleys and installation quality all affect how a roof survives a storm. A premium shingle over poor detailing is still a poorly performing roof.

Impact-Resistant Shingles FAQ
What are impact-resistant shingles?
Asphalt shingles reinforced to resist impact better than standard shingles, rated under the UL 2218 test in which steel balls are dropped onto the shingle from a set height.
What is the difference between Class 3 and Class 4 shingles?
Both are impact-rated under UL 2218. Class 4 withstands the largest steel ball used in the test; Class 3 withstands the next size down. Class 4 is the rating insurers most commonly reference.
Are impact-resistant shingles hail-proof?
No. No shingle is hail-proof. Impact-rated shingles perform better under impact than standard shingles, but large or wind-driven hail can still damage them.
Will impact-resistant shingles lower my insurance premium?
Some carriers offer a credit for an impact-rated roof and some don't, and the terms differ by policy. Ask your insurer directly — we can't promise a discount on their behalf.
Are impact-resistant shingles worth it in North Texas?
They're most worth considering when you're already replacing the roof, when the property has a history of hail claims, and when you plan to stay in the home long enough for the upgrade to matter.
Do they look different from regular shingles?
Generally no. Impact-rated products come in the same architectural profiles and colour ranges as standard shingles.
Which manufacturers make them?
Impact-rated lines are widely available. Blue Roofing is GAF Certified and a Malarkey Emerald Pro Contractor, and both offer impact-rated shingles.
Do I still need my roof inspected after hail if I have Class 4 shingles?
Yes. Impact-rated shingles reduce damage; they don't eliminate it. An inspection after a significant storm is still the right step.
